Sealed vs Ported Subwoofer Boxes
The right answer depends on space, output goals, and how much box size you can tolerate.
Choose sealed if you want
- A smaller enclosure.
- A simpler build with fewer variables.
- Tighter packaging in limited hatch or trunk space.
- A safer first project when you are still learning.
Choose ported if you want
- More output in the tuned range.
- Deeper extension when the design is matched well to the driver.
- A louder system without immediately jumping to more power or more cone area.
The tradeoff most people underestimate
Ported boxes almost always ask for more space and more design discipline. The port itself takes up room, the tuning target matters, and mistakes are easier to make if dimensions are rushed.
